Violence
Not a single day goes by that we, the media or those around us do not come into contact with some form of violence: horrible, inexplicable crimes, family dramas, taxing, bullying, assault, sexual assault and verbal assault are unfortunately part of our daily reality.
Adults and children cannot be brutalized without major scars or damage to their psychological state and their behaviour remaining. The period of helplessness that follows a stressful event usually lasts two to four weeks, but can go on indefinitely if the crime or the act of violence awakens past traumas, if the victim does not feel understood or tries to act as though everything is okay or if the violence continues.
Many different treatments are possible, but none of them replace the need for every one of us to refuse to tolerate victimizing relationships and maintain respectful relationships, the only true prevention against violence. The best treatment for violence is to refuse to live in fear.
