Causes
The severity and duration of the event, as well as the physical proximity of the person exposed, are risk factors in the onset of PTSD. In men, as the first reported cases have shown PTSD strikes in war situations; in women, the most common traumas are sexual or other assaults, as well as abductions. It is also know that an earlier mental illness may make people more vulnerable to PTSD.
Anyone who has already experienced PTSD remains vulnerable and may, depending on the circumstances, see the symptoms reappear. Sometimes the after-effects of PTSD come in the form of depression, anxiety disorder, or alcohol or drug abuse. Resorting to drugs or alcohol could be a way for someone who is suffering to alleviate the anguish or dull the fear of menacing situations.
