The Mental Illness Foundation program plays a role in secondary prevention through its action in:
- At any given moment in Quebec, one out of six people is suffering from some form of mental illness. (Plan d'action en santé mentale 2005-2010-La force des liens, Ministère de la Santé et des Services sociaux du Québec). Managers will therefore be faced with this situation eventually.
- 85% of middle managers believe that helping their employees deal with mental illness is part of their duties; however, 81% of middle managers say they have not received proper training to recognize the manifestations of mental health problems among their employees and to take action in such a situation. (University of Michigan, Depression Center, 2004)
- According to an American study, depression is the main barrier to career advancement. (University of Michigan, Depression Center, 2004)
- In Canada, almost 600,000 employees reported having received a diagnosis of clinical depression. (Ipsos Reid, Mental Health in the Workplace, 2007)
- 3.9% of Quebec workers have been depressed in the last 12 months. (Statistics Canada, 2004)
- Almost 30% of people do not see a doctor because they think that treatment would not help them or because they don’t recognize the symptoms. (American Psychological Association, 2006)
The Mental Illness Foundation program plays a role in secondary prevention through its action in:
- early recognition of mental health problems;
- demystification among decision-makers, managers, workers, employer and union representatives, etc. ;
- communicating notions about mental illness and its impact on work;
- raising awareness among people about their role in maintaining their mental health;
- training managers in mental health issues and their management.
